In 19, the group recorded some songs and played some shows, attracting a growing interest in their music in early 1989, the band got support from the record label PolyGram, which signed with them. Gossard and Ament then started playing with Andrew Wood, lead singer of Malfunkshun, something that would become the band Mother Love Bone. With this band, they recorded and performed until they achieved a moderate success, but the band was dissolved in 1987, due to style conflicts between the two and the other members – Mark Arm and Steve Turner, who would later form Mudhoney. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were, in the mid- 1980s, members of Green River, one of the pioneering bands in the grunge movement. It is considered one of the most important bands of the 1990s.

In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as having “spent a lot of the last decade deliberately trying to destroy their own fame.” During his career, its members became noted for their refusal to adhere to traditional music industry practices, including their refusal to produce video clips and their engagement in a boycott against Ticketmaster.
